The Writing Barn Presents Advanced Writing Workshop – Little Turnings: Examining Emotional Pacing
with National Book Award nominee and esteemed YA author Sara Zarr

We’ve all read novels that transcend category and genre. Often, what makes these books rise above is hard to pin-point. It may be about voice, the sentence-level prose, the story itself, a combination of those things, or any number of ineffable connection points that the writer has made with the reader. We know we need believable characters and a compelling conflict. But how do we get characters to grow and change in ways that make readers forget they’re reading a book, and instead draw them into inhabiting a world full of people as real as themselves? How do we take characters on the emotional part of their journey and not only the physical one? We’ll talk about the subtleties of craft that can help give our stories the psychological and emotional complexity that results in transcendent work.
