Whether you love comic books, graphic novels, comic strips and/or movies based on comics, Austin-based comic book author Paul Benjamin wants to help you bring your comic book ideas to life. How does writing for comics differ from other forms of writing? How do comics get made? How can I find an artist with whom to collaborate? Will publishing a comic help me sell my film script or book rights to Hollywood? What steps do I need to take to make a comic and get it in front of readers?

Writing a comics script can use very different muscles from other forms of writing. Whether you’re interested in breaking into comics and writing your favorite superhero or want to create a stunning graphic novel, this introduction to writing comics will give you the knowledge and tools you need to get started on your story’s Secret Origin.

In this three-hour intensive course, you’ll learn:

  • How comics get made
  • How comic book writing skills can improve any kind of writing
  • How to write a comic book script (template provided)
  • How to find and work with artists
  • How to create (and sell!) a mini-comic
  • How to meet and pitch editors so you can get published

Be sure to bring a web ready device and be ready to write. We’ll be starting your comic book script in class by writing comic book short story scripts.

Who should take this course:

  • Writers interested in creating sequential art narratives (comic books, comic strips, graphic novels, etc.)
  • Writers of all genres
  • Writers interested in applying comics writing skills to other forms of writing (brief dialogue, visual storytelling, implied action, etc.)
