Your Bendable Backbone: Using Structure to Enhance the Story You Want to Tell, lecture by agent/author Ammi-Joan Paquette

Structure is one of those “invisible yet essential” aspects of your story—but what exactly is it? And what can it do for your story? In this lecture, we’ll explore some of the different ways that structure can frame a story, with a look at some terrific books which have done it right. We’ll discuss how to choose a framework that enhances and makes the most of your story, how to weave your story around that frame, and ultimately how to craft a story that will ring true in all the right ways—the story only you can tell.

(*Books to be familiar with: The Shining Girls, by Lauren Beukes, The Truth About Alice by Jen Mathieu, And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, The Woman in White, by Wilkie Collins, and Night Film, by Marisha Pessl.)

Remembering the Rules so You Can Break Them: Enhancing the Poetics of Your Prose, lecture by author K. A. Holt

We all know that language is important, but have you ever thought of language as a character in and of itself? Sculpting words to enhance your writing isn’t just something “literary” authors do, and if done right doesn’t just add flowery extras to your prose. To truly enhance your writing you have to be able to embrace all those poetic devices you learned in elementary school. Why? So you can sprinkle them in your prose in the least obvious places, making your writing richer and deeper in an almost subliminal way. We’ll look at some amazing examples of poetic devices used in prose, practice using them ourselves, and discuss how “writing outside of the box” can mean going back to basics – and then making your own rules.

So if in Austin or nearby, sign up now. There will be a limited number of lecture only registrants sold.
