Katherine Applegate, Newbery winning and NYT bestselling author, and good friend of The Writing Barn has created the Mary Carolyn Davies/Wishtree MG Write. Submit. Support. Scholarship to be awarded to:

- to be shared by (2) MG writers for half the amount of a Write. Submit. Support. registration ($900)
This scholarship honors poet, novelist and playwright Mary Carolyn Davies, whose poem, Appleagate chose to open her latest novel, Wishtree.
Katherine writes, “I am so glad to honor the memory of Mary Carolyn Davies in some way, and to be a small part of the amazing support team The Writing Barn has assembled for aspiring writers.”
Mary Carolyn Davies was both in Washington in the early 1890’s. She attended the University of California-Berkeley for one year, where she won the Emily Chamberlin Cook prize for poetry in her freshnam year, and was the first woman to win the Bohemian Club Prize for poetry. Davies moved to Greenwich Village as a young woman, working as a freelance writer writing short stories and poems. After a move back to Portland, Oregon, she served as the president of the Women’s Press Club of Oregon and president of the Northwest Poetry Society. She published poetry collections in experimental forms, as well as seeing her plays produced. Among them, “The Slave with Two Faces,” which was produced by the Provincetown Players.
Little is known of Davies’s life after her move back to New York in the 1930s. There were reports of her living in poverty, and no records of her death.
Bethany Hegedus, Founder of The Writing Barn and creator of the Write. Submit. Support program is touched beyond belief at the generous kindness Katherine Applegate has chosen to bestow on one or two middle grade writers who will be studying with NYT best-selling author and VCFA MFA alumn, Carrie Jones. Bethany writes:
“Katherine is a writer’s writer. She has been there–wherever ‘there’ is for the writer and her desire to honor a Mary Carolyn Davies, who worked her entire life to be true to her creative soul and spark and whose life ended in poverty and with no death record, is a way for her to remind all of us, that the work matters most when it comes to pursuing a literary life. We are honored beyond belief to grant this scholarship to one or two middle grade writers.”
