What We Read This Pride Month

Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag by Rob Sanders

Written by our very own Writing Barn faculty Rob Sanders, the very first picture book about the remarkable and inspiring story of the Gay Pride Flag! In this deeply moving and empowering true story, young readers will trace the life of the Gay Pride Flag, from its beginnings in 1978 with social activist Harvey Milk and designer Gilbert Baker to its spanning of the globe and its role in today’s world.

Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy

Another favorite written by WB faculty, power couple Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy teamed up to create this YA sci-fi fantasy take on the classic Arthurian legend in which the Once & Future king is a teenage girl with a universe to save and hetero-normative expectations to defy.

Passing by Nella Larsen

Nella Larsen, known bisexual and famed member of the Harlem Renaissance, presents a tale of two childhood friends who reconnect as adult women living starkly different lives. Tackling issues of racial boundaries, repressed sexuality, and gender relations, Passing is a must-read.

Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson

Depicting an affair with a married woman, the narrator of Jeanette Winterson’s Written on the Body has neither name nor gender, inviting us to consider the ways in which desire and love often transcend the boundaries we place on them.
