What those who have stayed with us have said…
Why didn’t I know about the Writing Barn sooner? I have lived in Austin for 10 years, and in the past year I have attended two Write-Away Days and one free Words and Wine Wednesday event. I have already enrolled in another class for this spring. The Writing Barn is a delightful space for writing and revising, but its real value is building a community of writers in Austin. Owner Bethany’s genuine interest in the success of the writing community (whether commercial or personal) is the real treasure here. I encourage you to get on the mailing list and don’t be afraid to sign up for any of the events that catch your eye. You’ll always meet neat people and learn something new. Write Away Day attendee

The Writing Barn is the perfect environment for reflection. While there, I wrote and read and wrote some more. Jaimie R. Balthazar, screenwriter
The beautiful setting, the cozy accommodations and Bethany’s easy hospitality, all combine to create an atmosphere where creative inspiration runs rampant. I love every visit to the Barn, and always leave feeling refreshed. Christina Mandelski, author
It’s not just that The Writing Barn is a refreshing setting in a hot state — it’s the sense of community there that makes it so special. MT Anderson, National Book Award winner
On Teaching a Workshop at The Writing Barn
I had the pleasure of spending two full days in January with my classes at The Writing Barn. Everyone raved not only about the workshops, but about the space. It’s bright, comfortable, and wonderful, both inside and out. One student even suggested that she’d like to live there!
—Scott Wiggerman, poet/teacher
The moment I set foot on the grounds of The Writing Barn, I knew it would quickly become a haven for writers. When we weren’t gathered in the barn for class, my students found solace and solitude on the grounds — walking, writing, and meeting their own minds. The Barn and its surroundings held us up and gave us a place to connect to ourselves and our writing.

On Attending a Workshop at The Writing Barn
Being immersed in Nature energizes my writing creativity and intuition. The atmosphere and grounds of The Writing Barn, both indoor and outdoor aspects, provided me that ingredient and catalyst at Saundra Goldman’s recent silent writing retreat. From under the wide wing-span of the towering oaks to the comfy sitting areas in The Barn, I found many spaces of solitude to write and imagine. My time there bore fruitful insight for my current writing project. Thank you for sharing your vision and labors in Austin — it works!

On Launching a Book at The Writing Barn
We searched far and wide for the perfect location to hold our book launch party — we had so many different needs, we didn’t think we’d find anything that would work. We had almost given up on having a party when we learned about The Writing Barn. It was like kismet.
There was plenty of space for food, a book sale, and a separate autograph area; tons of sitting and chatting areas for our guests; beautiful decor that complimented our display of original artwork; and a lovely, shady, outdoor space for kids to play games, create art projects and where we were able to have live miniature horses! To top it off, Bethany was the ultimate hostess — helpful, professional and delightful.
It was our dream book launch party! We had such a great experience and the location is so versatile. We’d have another event there in a heartbeat!

On Throwing a Writing Barn Birthday Bash
After taking a tour of The Writing Barn, I decided to hold my literary husband’s birthday bash there.
What a treat! The setting was perfect, and the kitchen made it so easy to prepare and present the food.
It was a bit chilly that night, but the outdoor heating lanterns allowed us to use the screened-in porch comfortably.
With convenient and spacious parking, our guests didn’t have to worry about off-site parking.
Bethany Hegedus is a delight to work with. She is so engaging and flexible, I felt an instant bond. I’m beyond grateful to her for helping me create a night to remember!”
